赤
- red;
- to be red;
It is the representative character used for the color red. It can also mean "naked" or "bare."
Usage in Korean
In Korea, 赤 is generally read as "적," but it also has an alternate reading "치," which came into use during the Yuan dynasty period (examples include names like 안도치 安都赤 and 다루가치 達魯花赤). The reading "치" was also used to phonetically write native Korean words like 치마 (skirt) using 赤 㐃.
In modern Chinese, 赤 is considered an advanced-level HSK character and is mostly used in proper nouns (such as 赤峰, 赤鱲角) rather than in everyday language. Instead, 紅 (红) is commonly used to represent the color red in Chinese.
