爽
- clear;
- bright;
- distinct;
- refreshing;
Etymology
Traditionally classified as a compound ideograph, though its exact origin remains debated.
Traditional / popular explanation (Folk etymology)
It is sometimes explained as:
㸚 (“bright pattern”) combined with 大 (“big”).
This explanation, however, is considered folk etymology and lacks strong paleographic support.
Paleographic & scholarly interpretations
Oracle bone and bronze inscriptions reveal that 爽 originally depicted a patterned torso-like form.
Several scholars proposed different interpretations:
羅振玉 (Luo Zhenyu): saw the pattern as two 火 shapes.
唐蘭 (Tang Lan): interpreted it as a person holding ritual vessels under the arms.
郭沫若 (Guo Moruo): viewed it as representing breasts and treated it as a variant of 母.
Modern interpretation (notably in the research tradition of 白川靜, Shirakawa Shizuka):
The character likely depicted a ritual tattoo pattern on the female chest.
In Shang oracle inscriptions, a similar graph was used in royal ancestral naming contexts referring to royal consorts (王妣).
This connects 爽 with the broader semantic field of:
- patterned body marking;
- ritual decoration;
- visual clarity and brightness.
Like 文, which depicts a tattooed male torso, 爽 appears to depict a tattooed female torso.
Original sense:
patterned; visually distinct; marked.
Developed meanings:
- clear; distinct;
- bright; vivid;
- refreshing (clear sensation);
- emotionally pleasant.
Thus the semantic evolution moved from:
visible pattern → clarity → vividness → refreshing sensation.
