It is sometimes explained as:

Oracle bone and bronze inscriptions reveal that 爽 originally depicted a patterned torso-like form.

羅振玉 (Luo Zhenyu): saw the pattern as two 火 shapes.

唐蘭 (Tang Lan): interpreted it as a person holding ritual vessels under the arms.
