Etymology

Originally, it was used as a phonetic loan from 母 (mother). In bronze inscriptions (金文 jinwen), 母 was sometimes used in the sense of 毋. Around the Warring States period, 毋 diverged from 母 as a distinct character. In some Min languages, which have long had their own independent development, 毋 is still used for negation.
