高
- high, tall;
- eminent;
It commonly conveys notions of height, greatness, excellence, or seniority.
Usage in Korean
In modern Korean, 고(高) is also widely used as a suffix, as in:
고등학교 (高等學校) – high school
고위직 (高位職) – high-ranking position
고속도로 (高速道路) – expressway
Although 高 is not a commonly used radical in modern characters, it has historically appeared as a semantic or phonetic component in certain rare or archaic characters like: 䯧, 䯨, 髚, 髝, 髞, etc.—though these are now virtually obsolete.
Alternative forms
髙 is a simplified or alternate form of 高
Similar shape characters
The 亠 (뚜껑 두) part at the top of 高 often leads to confusion with other similar-looking radicals, but it is not the main radical itself.
Additionally, due to its visual similarity to the Korean interjection “흠”, the character 高 is sometimes humorously used as a meme element in internet culture.
