Etymology
首 (수) is a pictograph that imitates the frontal view of a human head.
Its original and primary meaning is “head.”
However, in modern usage, the meaning of “head” in the literal, anatomical sense is mostly limited to dictionaries and classical texts.
Usage in Korean
Today, 首 is more commonly used in the extended senses:
• As an adjective meaning “first,” “beginning,” or “primary” (e.g. 首位 – first place, 首次 – first time).
• As a noun meaning “chief” or “leader” (e.g. 首領 – leader, 수령).
• As a counter (양사) for poems, songs, or verses (e.g. 시 한 수 – one poem).
