詞 is a phonosemantic compound made from:

言 (언) – meaning speech, words (semantic component)

司 (사) – meaning to manage, to govern (phonetic component)

Compared to 辭 (사), which also means “speech” or “to speak,” 詞 is used more specifically for:

• lyrics (e.g., song lyrics, poetry lyrics);

• parts of speech (e.g., in grammar, as in 명사 (名詞) – noun, 동사 (動詞) – verb).
