素
- originally, fundamental, basis;
- plain;
- white;
Etymology
It is a compound ideograph (會意字), composed of:
糸 (silk, thread) – indicating fine silk threads;
垂 (swi, “to hang down”) – in abbreviated form, showing silk threads hung out to dry.
The imagery is that of white silk hung out and not yet dyed, which gave the meanings “white, pure, plain,” and by extension, “basic, original, fundamental.”
Semantic development:
Original sense: white silk (undyed, plain cloth).
By extension:
- white, pure – as in 素服 (white mourning clothes);
- basis, origin, fundamental – as in 元素 (element, lit. “original basis”);
- plain, unadorned, vegetarian – as in 素食 (vegetarian food), 素顔 (bare face, natural look).
Usage in Korean
Across East Asia, it remains a core morpheme for purity and foundation.
소복 (素服) – white mourning clothes
원소 (元素) – chemical element
평소 (平素) – ordinarily, usually
소연 (素然) – natural, plain
소지 (素地) – basis, foundation
It is also a popular character in given names, especially female names (e.g. 혜소 惠素, 지소 智素), due to the associations of purity, plainness, and foundation.
